Get to the know the maker series Part II
Welcome to the "Get to know the maker" series of blog posts!
I'm going to give you a few details each time. Random facts or stories which you may or may not know about the maker behind this business, which is "yours truly". :)
- I purchased my own little fixer upper in 2010. A 1950's 1 1/2 story house. I was just going to clean it and paint it and then move in. My mom randomly pulled back a piece of paneling and when we saw what the wall looked behind it...well, full demo happened. We completely gutted and redid the entire upstairs and most of the main floor. I didn't move in until a year later. We tore down the old garage and added on a room above the new garage which is now my home office space. The renos continue...but very, very slowly, since I'm doing as much of it as I can by myself with a little help here and there from different family members.
- I love to garden (when I have the time). There's something so soothing and healing about working in the dirt. Taking care of my shrubs and flowers. I used to spend hours sketching out plans for my shrub beds.
- I have asthma plus I have a dust allergy. It's quite bad. I also don't like wearing my big dust mask because it makes me so hot. I'm not ready to give up woodworking just because of my allergies. We have a dust collector in our shop which helps tremendously, but I still try to wear my mask most of the time. And when I don't I ended up coughing and wheezing a LOT.
- I don't get my products made in China or some other foreign country. I make my products by myself right here in Roblin, Manitoba. I have a cousin who has helped me out with sanding a few times and sometimes I managed to drag my Dad & Mom into helping me out when I'm way behind. Otherwise it's just me making the stuff. That's why it takes longer to get lots of new products finished and ready to sell.
- I one time compiled a songbook full of some of my favorite gospel hymns and had it published. It was a dream of mine to do it and I did it. It was a lot of hard work and there was a lot of stress involved. It's definitely not for the faint of heart. :)
- I miss doing craft shows and I'm toying with the idea/thought of doing some again. The only thing is that I'm terrible at driving big trucks and for sure trucks with trailers. I sell large products which means I need large displays...that's basically the only thing stopping me from doing shows. I've got to figure out a solution to this problem of mine.
